we are in the news again on the milton keynes citizen over 30 of the dealers from the now closed woburn abbey antiques centre have banded together to form the antiques association in a fabulous five storey georgian townhouse at market place in the village of woburn. find us on google maps the creation of the antiques association the summer of 2013 saw the totally unexpected closure of the well-known woburn abbey antiques centre, situated for 46 years in the south court within the grounds of woburn abbey, to the dukes of bedford since the late 1600s. 32 of the existing 43 dealers from the abbey centre have re-located to the centre of woburn village at 4, market place. beside us in woburn are other interesting shops, the auction rooms of charles ross fine art and hotels pubs and restaurants. named the antiques association, the centre occupies the ground and lower ground floor of a beautiful double fronted georgian building. we officially opened on november 1st, 2013. our aim is to continue to offer a wide range of quality antiques and art at fair prices. situated in the counties, close to the m1 and fairly close to the m25 and m40, the antiques association is easily accessed from london, the south of england and middle england. luton airport is but a few miles away. the centre has a huge variety of quality antiques, both large and small, to suit every pocket. furniture includes georgian, oak and country, victorian, edwardian, arts & crafts, painted and some upholstered. there is a large selection of pottery, porcelain, glass, treen, copper, brass, silver and objet virtue. some dealers specialise in paintings, both oils and watercolours, japanese items, boxes of every description, prints & maps and there is also some taxidermy and lighting on offer, miniatures and silhouettes also feature. now in 2018 several of the original dealers have moved on or retired, being replaced by fresh dealers of interesting, good quality antiques. subjects also represented are silver, some militaria and scientific instruments and art deco. most of the dealers have been established in the antiques trade for many years. the antiques association is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., 7 days a week, closing only on christmas eve, christmas day and boxing day. to take a tour around the shop click on https://goo.gl/maps/civ9y the village and history woburn was first recorded as a hamlet in 969 and is found in the domesday book of 1086. it is best known as the location of woburn abbey, founded by cistercian monks in 1145 and granted to the first earl of bedford in 1538 after the dissolution of the monasteries, and woburn safari park. woburn has been burned down and rebuilt three times. a mediaeval chimney fire spread due to the prevalence of thatched roofs and closely built houses. then, during the english civil war, the cavaliers burned down much of the village and in 1724 a third fire destroyed much of the town, which was re-built in the georgian style that remains today. during the nineteenth century, woburn was an important staging post on a nationwide coaching network. the town had 27 inns and the first 24 hour post office outside of london. however, with woburn sands and not woburn being selected for a railway station, woburn's importance attached to its strategic location decreased. the population fell from 2100 in 1851 to 700 about a century later. the full history on woburn and surrounding areas can be found in the heritage centre in the village or on their website - www.woburnheritagemuseum.co.uk woburn today is now brimming with specialist shops, antique centres, hotels, pubs and restaurants as well as the only michelin-starred restaurant in bedfordshire, paris house. it supports a farmers market on the third sunday every month, a village festival is hoped to be revived and a yearly open garden day among other events. centre parcs opened spring 2014 we have been joined by a sloth for those of you who didn't know, the name for a group or collection of bears is a "sloth" or "sleuth". please look at our teddy section in the "see our latest items " menu to see the great selection of antique and vintage bears on offer. our teddy bear specialist has now moved on. she is currently running 2 international toy fairs per year. for information please go to www.115yearsofteddybears.com john bly lectures antiques association dealer and antiques roadshow expert, john bly hosted 3 lectures on "antique english silver" in october 2014. november 8th, 2014. the lectures have now taken place and were well received and enjoyed. participants learned facts and asked questions whilst enjoying nibbles and a glass (or 2) of wine. watch this space for further lectures and events. sadly john has now moved on but his events are greatly missed. regular customer draws the antiques association customer draw took place throughout 2014. many clients were happy winners r
